Why we're building AgAnswers: a note for investors
Within five to ten years, human-supervised AI agents will manage farm operations. Here's why we think AgAnswers will lead that change.
That's our thesis, and AgAnswers is building the assistant that gets farms there: one that works across all of a farm's data and does the work, not just answers questions.
Why now
- Adoption. Voice and text become the interface, even for complex decisions, so farmers don't have to learn new software.
- Functionality. Advanced features that were once costly to build, from reading scanned tickets to working with shapefiles and equipment APIs, are now fast to ship and combine.
- Optimization. AI can reason over more data than any one operator can hold in their head, and optimize decisions across the whole operation.
We see it in our own pace: in the last two months the team shipped ten major features to production, roughly two releases a week.
The opportunity
AI for farm management is in its infancy. We start with the core of running a farm, then extend into input purchasing and farm finance, and from US farms to farms worldwide.
The biggest gains come where the assistant touches money: cheaper grain marketing, and input savings from precision agriculture. Farmer subscriptions are built and billing is live, and we're developing partnerships with agribusinesses (lenders, insurers, ethanol plants, grain elevators and input suppliers) that want to reward farmers for good records and good practices.
The team
AI, agriculture and entrepreneurship, with the track record in each:
- Vikram Adve, co-founder and CEO. Co-creator of LLVM, ACM Fellow, and director of the AIFARMS National AI Institute. On leave from the University of Illinois to lead AgAnswers full-time.
- Andrew Nelson, co-founder and Chief Innovation Officer. Fifth-generation farmer on 7,500 acres, formerly at Microsoft Research.
- Chris Harbourt, co-founder and advisor. Founded Agrible, acquired by Nutrien for $63M.
- Aidan Andrews, co-founder and CTO. Berkeley AI Research alumnus and 2026 Illinois Innovation Award winner.
- Jason Little, Director of Sales. Built Agrible's sales organization and closed $135M in ag data licensing deals at Nutrien.
- Gene Bederak, founding engineer. Over 20 years building and scaling software products.
Where we are
Serra Ventures made our first institutional investment. Our beta is running on crop farms in the Midwest and Washington state, and by Q4 2026 we're aiming for design partners and product-market fit.
